IF you are waiting for your hair to grow, then you know that it can be an exercise in frustration. That’s because on most of us hair grows just a half an inch a month more or less. Often less! There are those blessed people whose hair grows like weeds - fast and strong - but take solace in that the average person has issues with their locks.

But it is possible to improve your hair's growth and quality. In fact, speaking of weeds, hair is not much different from a lawn. Give it the proper care and the right conditions and out sprout full, hearty shoots everyone will admire.

Tips on How to Make Your Hair Grow Faster

  • Be nice to your hair. Treat it gently when brushing, shampooing and detangling. Go slowly and carefully, particularly with wet hair that is prone to breaking. Avoid pulling it tightly into ponytails, which over time can cause hair loss. Also, consider wearing your locks in a style that does not require torture devices like blow dryers, flatirons or curling irons.

  • Get a scalp massage. A scalp massage increases blood circulation, and more blood flow to the area is a feast for hair follicles, stimulating those lazy hair cells to get together and grow. You can do this yourself every time you shampoo or a couple of times a week.

You'd be this happy, too, if you learned how to make your hair grow faster!
  • Eat well. Load up on lots of vitamin- and protein-rich leafy greens and colorful vegetables. Other hair healthy eats: beans, legumes, whole grains, fresh fruit.

  • Take high-quality hair growth vitamins. B vitamins like biotin are key. At this link, you'll find a list of hair-helping herbs and vitamins.

  • Shampoo less. Yes, don't faint, but you can skip a day or two - even three! Most people do not by any means need to shampoo their hair daily. Over-washing strips your scalp of the natural oils that protect it and your hair. Often just a thorough rinse with water can freshen your hair enough without subjecting it to harsh ingredients typically found in shampoos. Or take some conditioner and rub your scalp with it and run it through your ends for a gentler "shampoo."

  • Get a cut. This seems counterintuitive, but if you don't keep split ends at bay, you're in for breakage. Tell your hair stylist your plans to grow it long and follow his or her recommendations on when to come back for a “dusting.” Probably 6 to 8 weeks.
  • Don't stress out. Believe it or not, but severe stress is one cause of hair loss. So if there is turbulence in your life, learn some ways to relax. It's not only good for your hair, but your overall well-being.
  • Exercise patience and gratitude. As long as it's growing - however slowly - you're still ahead of the game. After all, it could be worse: your hair could stop growing or start falling out! (Hair implants anyone?) So let's be grateful, and continue to nourish our hair from the inside out as well as treating it with care.

Of course, sometimes hair can grow to thick and too fast - everywhere else! In that case, permanent hair removal might be a great solution.
